What did you buy this week?
Re: What did you buy this week?
If I was on the gulf side I'd already be half way across the country. This one is going to be bad.
I think we also have a heightened awareness right now because of Helene, the stuff that happened in NC, TN, GA is brutal. Long recovery ahead for a lot of those places.
If you're in Milton's path be safe out there my fellow Floridians.

My friends in Melboure have evacuated. They think this one is going to be one of the worst they have seen in their 25 years there.

Re: What did you buy this week?
I'm glad I moved away from Florida. After I left, a hurricane tore the roof off my former apartment. Once the insurance companies pull out, I wonder how long it'll take for the state to become nothing but large estates for self-insured rich people and shanty towns with expendable housing for everyone else.
Re: What did you buy this week?
There is a reason the native indians in Florida and along the rest of the Caribbean coast thought the Europeans were crazy to build large settlements directly on the coast (they generally didn't.....)

Ever since I saw The Wizard of Oz (the 1939 movie) as a kid, I had wondered how can people live in a place where they know possibly a tornado or hurricana will come any day and basically destroy everything they have...
Does whatever a Spiderdragon can!
Re: What did you buy this week?
Hurricanes are different than tornadoes. A tornado can appear pretty much across 60% of North America in any given thunderstorm. However, they are small and don't really do much damage generally. Sure the thin line of destruction they bring can be big....but its always a very isolated thin, short swath of land affected and they have to hit a densely populated area to kill many people....and they almost never cause power outages to large areas even for a few hours. Tornados rarely stay on the ground for even a mile before the vortex fails.BBShockwave wrote: ↑Tue Oct 08, 2024 7:59 am Ever since I saw The Wizard of Oz (the 1939 movie) as a kid, I had wondered how can people live in a place where they know possibly a tornado or hurricana will come any day and basically destroy everything they have...
Make no mistake....tornadoes are terrifying. I've seen six with my eyes over the years....and I really don't care to see any more. They really do sound like a train if you are VERY close....trust me you won't have any doubt in your mind if/when you hear one. But I'd rather be faced with a tornado than a severe hurricane along the beach. The tornado you can hunker down and probably survive....and the event lasts 20 seconds. The hurricane? Yeah, there isn't anywhere to run, the wall of water is going to drown you if you don't get 15 feet up or a half mile inland, and its gonna last for 6 hours....then the aftermath is gonna last weeks.
Give me the tornado any day.
Re: What did you buy this week?
Agreed.
Also, based on graphic I saw this morning, I'm supposed to be in hurricane force winds for 12 hours and that's after it crosses the width of the state. That's going to be a Category 1 storm for me. For reference that's 74-95 mph (64-82 kt or 119-153 km/hr) Hopefully it ends up being tropical force instead but that's just wishful thinking on my part.

Re: What did you buy this week?
USPS utterly failed yesterday (was out for delivery, updated the delivery window three times, as they missed each one, then finally ‘sorry, it’ll come tomorrow’) and didn’t deliver mail to my whole neighborhood.
But, Kill Team: Hivestorm finally arrived today. I’m excited I may actually have the health to get it finished before the next edition change.
The order also included my first ever bottle of turbo dork paint, Forrest Flux.

A tornado location is unpredictable though - they can form in seconds. At least with the hurricane you have usually days of advanced notice if you choose to leave.jaredh wrote: ↑Tue Oct 08, 2024 9:31 amHurricanes are different than tornadoes. I just hope the insurance companies can stay solvent after all these massive loss storms. A buddy of mine in Orlando is flipping out because his insurance just changed his policy on Oct 1 to increase the hurricane deductible from $1000 to 2% of home value. He is praying his roof survives.
There is none higher.
Re: What did you buy this week?
I don't understand how any insurance company can afford to do business in Florida and never have understood....and I work in insurance.
Re: What did you buy this week?
Yeah the math just doesn't work.
Just some random numbers, insured at a cost of $5k a year but if they have to replace my house it's $500k. So...they need me to only have my house destroyed once in a hundred years for them to break even.
Hypothetically you(an insurance company) spread that risk out over 1000s of customers but they cannot be in that high risk area of damage or you'll never be able to cover the costs in a disaster. It's a really weird market for insurance.
In the last couple years we've seen crazy changes here in FL for insurance costs.
Brand new houses are close to the national averages. 10-20 year old houses can be 2x-3x the averages. Over 20 years old and it can be 5x more than a brand new house of equal sq/ft. Companies won't even talk to you unless your roof is under 15 years old.
It's like they're penalizing your house for surviving as long as it has because it's bound to get destroyed eventually.

Re: What did you buy this week?
Or it could be like paying more for health insurance as you get older. Houses get decrepit as they age.
Re: What did you buy this week?
Well best of luck to all within its path thats crazy..... for once I will stick to the cold winters.
I do live in a tornado area (Aylmer), but they are smaller and just wreck stuff (roofs the odd house more than anything) Seen like 3 or 4 in my lifetime.
This week picked up some single minis from KoL
Moonlight Guardian (want to use as some type of golem/construct for Sune)
Star Angler why not seemed fun to throw into the Astral Sea
a bunch of Spyder Fiends cause I always wanted to run the Rod of Seven Parts storyline
Skeleton with mace cause I was missing such a thing in my collection
Blazebear not sure why but prob use it as some type of corrupted bear of Malar or some beast to use with ettercaps ..not sure yet but it was gross and I like it.
Also picked up some Dwarven Forge missing sets for my collection from Hellscape to make more fun lava rivers
Hellscape Magma Straights Set
Hellscape Magma River Set (curves, 3 way, etc)
Closed out and paid shipping for Dungeon and Lasers Cave Campaign...
Oh and got Quests from the Infinite Staircase Book and the paperback of the novel The Fallsbacks fall from Ruin.
Picked up also a dollar store skeletal dragon from the Halloween ales , realized after I already have a gargantuan from the Pathfinder set from years ago... oh well it was like 4 bucks.

Re: What did you buy this week?
Out of curiosity; what did you end up getting from the campaign?
We're sure we'll back it as well but still deciding how much we need of each set. That journey led us down the path of getting lots of other D&L retail sets
