Emissary of Erebos

Post by berk the black »

With almost everything being delayed these days, I got bored and strayed from two of my general guidelines.

First, I bought a MTG mini. I’m still not a fan of the MTG style for minis for the most part, but this huge snake had potential. And I could get one for pretty cheap even though he was a huge. He had some frills that would be beyond a normal snake, but still the sculpt seemed pretty decent to me.

Second, I painted him. The gold and purple paint scheme had to go. I wanted something a little more natural looking. So when I was at my FLGS for gaming, I picked up some paints to see what I could do to i prove upon this mini.

Here’s the original, courtesy of Kor’s set photos:

And here are the fruits of my labor. I think it is an improvement, but this whole project reinforced my philosophy of PPM over UPM:

Disclamer: I prefer black bases, and as such have painted many clear bases black. Pictures of my collection will reflect this, varying from the original way the mini was produced.

I like the change.
And I always love seeing the black bases!

Did you strip it first? It looks a bit like the underlying gold is giving the green just enough of a sheen to make it look more...snakey? I didn't hate the original, but I definitely like what you did.
This is too expensive.

Novice that I am, I just painted over the original paint.

I used the original colors to know what to paint what color, but then I realized that the original paint was so sloppy in places it was leading me astray….

Honestly I think it looks really great! I'd much rather have that mini than the one in the Theros set.

I agree with Aerodus. I would much rather have your paint job berk than the original one.

Looks good. Might light a fire under my butt; I really need to get back to repainting the Emissary of Purphoros. Right now he’s just brown. 😜

I don't see how that was your takeaway, because your version looks WAY better than the original.

It’s the amount of time I spent getting one mini table ready when I had to do the work myself. I have thousands of PPM minis, and if I had to do this for each one I’d only have hundreds after years of collecting.

I do agree, someone who is only painting one of a mini, and it is for their own personal collection should be able to do a better job than some one who has to paint the of same mini over and over and has demands on increasing speed… But for my purposes (strictly gaming, not as a showpiece or investment) the PPM quality is more than adequate, and a lot better than having to place unpainted minis on the table that “I meant to get around to someday”.

Fair enough. I do wind up putting a lot of time into painting, but my job is very talky and social so miniature painting is a nice quiet way to relax in the evening.
