Approved Equipment Tags

Post by Kor »

Due to the sizeable amount of equipment tags, all the approved tags will not be listed here, and instead I will try to set out the general guidelines for adding them.

Generalized equipment tags - these will probably be the most common ones used:
  • armor - Used for a mini wearing any type of armor. Often it can be hard to determine what the type of armor is, so this is considered a general "catch-all". If the armor type is clearly identifiable, then the matching armor type tag can also be used, but the "armor" tag should still be added.
  • sword - Used for a mini wielding a sword. Sometimes it can be difficult to determine if a sword should be called a shortsword, longsword, rapier or scimitar, so this tag should be used for any these weapons. The specific sword name may also be used (i.e. longsword), but the "sword" tag should still be added.
  • bow - Used for a mini wielding a greatbow / longbow / shortbow. No specific bow types have been added, so just add the "bow" tag to a mini wielding any type of bow. Most humanoid, bow wielding minis should also get the archer class tag.
As for other items the mini is holding, or gear worn, feel free to use your discretion as to whether it should be added as a tag. Ideally, if you can anticipate that someone would want to search for a mini which would have that item of gear, then please add it to the list.

Some items of gear might require two tags, such as: mandolin and musical instrument, or hat and tricorn hat.

Musical Instrument separation is a great idea.

On that note, I know of at least one mini with the following

drum
electric guitar (yeah, maybe just call it a mandolin….)
lute (is there enough difference in looks to identify between it and mandolin?
lyre / harp

And not suitable for the equipment category but possibly relevant for search bard minis would be the action of singing. I know several bard players have selected singing, simply because it allows their hands to be free for other things. I don’t know if we would really be able to tell whether a mini is singing or not except for those creatures with howl in their names.
Disclamer: I prefer black bases, and as such have painted many clear bases black. Pictures of my collection will reflect this, varying from the original way the mini was produced.

Also, I see a lack of any modern weapons.

While many of us prefer our minis to be more medieval in appearance, Pathfinder has a gunslinger class, and in Reign of Winter there were modern(ish) soldiers with gas masks, rifles and machine guns. I think they are important to acknowledge, and personally I would love a search capability where I could exclude those results. Many Pathfinder pirates have pistols as well.

Thinking of pistols also reminded me of one mini that has one but is sitting in a wheelchair. Wizkids has been accommodating in providing handicapped features for minis and I think your search should support that. Wheelchairs and crutches (can’t think of any fantasy minis with crutches at the moment) might be tags some would wish to filter by.

I was going to go to the Feature Tags topic as the wheelchair reminded me of some features that might be missing as well. But I think I’m getting ahead of Kor at the moment.

Disabilities are features. Some might be indicated by the equipment used to overcome the disability but other might not.

Amputee - minis missing hands, arms, or legs (ah another piece of equipment might be a pegleg) might be desirable in a search. Oddly enough, I think Vecna falls in this category even though he isn’t humanoid.

Scar

Tatoo - Not a disability, and not equipment either, but probably a feature sought after, especially for Barbarians and certain kinds of spell users.

Actually, if Starfinder and Star Wars minis are to be included, there are many many more modern weapons, armor and equipment to consider. Kor, what is the scope of your search capability?

Right now the list is just being populated based on the D&D minis entries. Once we start tagging other lines such as Star Wars, there will indeed be a whole lot more tags involved in all the categories.

Search considerations will allow for:
- searching 1 or more settings: sci-fi / fantasy
- searching 1 or more product lines: Icons of the Realms / Pathfinder Battles / Star Wars
- searching based on the age of the set the mini belongs to: such as to only search for minis in sets released (not reprinted) in the last 5 years.
- all other data in the database associated with the mini will also be searchable: size and rarity

The default search will be by mini name, but you will also be able to toggle this to search for a set name instead -- such as if someone wants to look at the minis within a set name that they remember, but are not sure where to find the set name within the menu hierarchy.
