Best WizKids' Pre-Painted Terrain or Accessory of 2021

Post by Kor »

Vote for a pre-painted terrain or accessory set released in 2021 which you believe deserves the title of "Best of 2021".

Members may cast votes for up to two premium terrain or accessory sets. The sets which receives the most votes will win this category. In the case of a tie, a panel of judges will be convened to break the tie.

Voting is open until the end of Sunday, November 19, 2022.

Note: I was not able to quickly ascertain what pre-painted terrain items and accessories were released by other manufacturers in 2021, so this poll is solely focused on items made by WizKids. We plan to broaden this category next year and include all other manufacturers of pre-painted terrain.

Shouldn't the Swamp Gas Balloon and Starfinder Docking Bay also be available to vote on in this category? :?:

The best pre-painted terrain of 2021 was by Dwarven Forge and Wizkids stuff isn't close. Galladoria would be in second. I find it really strange that this poll is only Wizkids since they are not a top tier terrain manufacturer. I wouldn't even include them in this poll, the same way I wouldn't put DF PPM in those polls - they aren't good enough.

Yes, I agree that there seems to be Wizkids Blinders on. For the minis, there aren’t many competitors to be left out, but for terrain, that does seem a whole different ballgame.
Disclamer: I prefer black bases, and as such have painted many clear bases black. Pictures of my collection will reflect this, varying from the original way the mini was produced.

I unfortunately had to put the blinders on, as I didn't have time to research what "sets" were released by other manufacturers in 2021. I was not able to readily find any "release dates" for sets released by Dwarven Forge. For 2022 though, I would like for that to be different. I will e-mail the manufacturers to see if they are able to provide me with a list of their terrain items that were released in 2022.

Perhaps the category should be “Best Wizkids Pre-Painted Terrain Or Accessory Of 2021”. I think the angst is from the fact that the “best terrain of 2021” is forced to be from Wizkids the way the poll is set up.

Yeah, I'd like to see prepainted terrain from other companies included as well in future series. In addition to the aforementioned Galladoria Games and Dwarven Forge, there's also Monster Fight Club, GameMat, GF9, and more. :)

The reason I haven't personally bought most of the Accessories sets is that most of them have serious trouble staying on theme, are severly lacking in the items you'd need multiples of, and are falsely trying to give an increased sense of value:
Spoiler
Show
  • Marketplace has barely any marketplace items, with just a single market stall and a bunch of other, unrelated(or barely related) items I don't want multiples of, so there's no reason to buy multiples of the set for more stalls either. Several of the items here should've been in the Town Watch set, such as the stockade. If they'd called this set for "Town Square" instead, all the items would make sense, at least. Even if I think it's a terrible set in regards to what items are put together.
  • Town Watch has two NPC minis that are related to the theme. Otherwise, the rest are random NPC minis varying from pirates to theatre actors. Every single terrain piece is for a smithy. No actual terrain pieces related to the theme, like for example a prisoner cart, and not even a single actual town watchman. The set really ought to have been called "Smithy with customers". And for a smithy, it's... decent. Would've been better if the price was halved by cutting out half the unnecessary NPC minis.
  • Merchants has some fitting terrain pieces and NPC minis. However, instead of actually giving us more thematically fitting terrain pieces or minis, we get NPC minis for bandits, executioners, and a hunchbacked man. The executioner is the same as the one in the Marketplace set, and the hunchback is the same one as in the Torture Chamber set, neither of which are likely you'll want multiples of, and neither having to do with the set's theme, making this just false value for anyone buying all the sets.
  • Torture Chamber has the theme on point with all its terrain and minis! Honestly, this is a great buy if you don't have any of those terrain pieces already! (Sadly, I do have a lot of them.) My personal second favourite Accessories set of the bunch.
  • Tavern is another Accessories set that is on point with the theme. However, the problems with it is that, aside from being the most boring looking tavern terrain ever, there's also just a single table. And two tiny stools. Buying more of the set won't help you increase those particularly quickly, but will give you multiples of the big bar pieces and fireplace, which you are unlikely to need. Very nice beds, at the very least, and the only NPC mini here is fittingly a barkeep. I'm almost surprised to not see a bandit or another executioner, though.
  • Kitchen is my personal favourite, as everything included are kitchen items, except for the toilet/outhouse and bathtub. However, those items are unique and semirelated enough to make sense as extra value, and also pieces you might get use out of with more than one if you're getting multiple sets - and that goes for all the other pieces as well! Weirdly, this is the set that comes with four flagons, and not the Tavern set. The single NPC mini makes sense, as its a classic barmaid. My only critique is that the shelves aren't stocked with items. But all in all, this is the best of the Accessories sets in my opinion, and the only one I've actually chosen to buy.
Now for the Yawning Portal sets:
  • The Yawning Portal Inn: This set is very impressive. I really like the endless mirror portal piece they added. I don't quite agree with the layout, but that's a minor thing. Also, this set is mainly for the people whom enjoy Warlock Tiles, which I personally don't. Also, kudos to Wizkids for changing the upper floor from a printed cardstock piece to a proper plastic floor! :D
  • Bars & Tables and Beds & Bottles: Get one of each for a nice tavern setup! Like seriously, get one of each of these and drop the Tavern Accessories set. These are really good, especially together! Of the two, I'd say the Beds & Bottles is the one with the most value for me.
As for the war machines, they're both decent options for that, but I honestly just don't care much about them.
So my votes go to the Kitchen set and the Beds & Bottles set. ;)

Probably the best way for me to populate this category for next year, will be just to initially take nominations, similar to what I did with some of the other categories.

I will still endeavor to get a list of released items from manufacturers though, so that it is clear what items were released in 2022, to help those that wish to nominate something from the release lists.
