Approved Gender Tags

Post by Kor »

Gender tags are intended to be used for humanoids that would typically be player characters or non-player characters. The reference of gender/sex can be sensitive, but for the purposes of tagging the minis I would like to keep the tags as objective as possible.
  • female: in most cases if the mini appears to have mammary gland breasts then tag it as a "female". If by lore or other description the mini is known to be female, then tag it as such.
  • male: in most cases if the mini has facial hair (some race like dwarves might be exceptions), lacks mammary gland breasts, or if by lore or other description is known to be male, then tag it as such.
Unknown: if the mini appears that it could fit either description as noted above, then apply both the male and female tags.

I don't think at this time there is a need for a non-binary tag or other types of non-specific gender tags, as really any miniature made could be deemed to be non-binary or non-specific. Should the need arise to re-examine these gender tags I will certainly be open to any discussion regarding them.

I know that there are characters in the forgotten realms that are neither male nor female and use "they/them" pronouns, like Fala Lefaliir. I do not know of any miniatures of characters that are canonically non-binary yet but it may need to change with future releases (or if I am missing any characters)

For non-binary, using both tags seems reasonable. Then, if I do a search for a female mini, I would then get all female and non-binary minis in my results. About the only thing it wouldn’t facilitate would be if I wanted to search for non-binary specifically, unless I could use a search criteria of male and female.
Disclamer: I prefer black bases, and as such have painted many clear bases black. Pictures of my collection will reflect this, varying from the original way the mini was produced.

This actually gets more complicated, as couldn’t just about any mini be used for non-binary characters?

Maybe instead of gender tags, make appearance (or Aesthetics) tags. Male, female, neither and either would suffice tbh.

Ooze, neither
Humanoid that could be either, either

Helps separate monsters from humanoids.

I think that's a good suggestion!

Categorizing minis as Male and Female is entirely appropriate. We're just specifying gender presentations/body types.

Instead of "unknown" I would suggest "unspecified". This would cover races that don't have defined secondary sex characteristics or universally known gender presentations. Lizardfolk, plasmoids, etc. would fall under this.

Using multiple tags for minis of other races like humans should be the way to go. If there is a way to search for minis that only have both tags 'male' and 'female' this will cover people who are looking for non-binary characters. If that isn't possible in the search engine then 'non-binary' might be a good option as well to add onto minis that have both 'male' and 'female' tags.
