Creative Kobold's Painted Minis!
Re: Creative Kobold's Painted Minis!
Those are some nicely painted blacks. I still struggle with nailing that look, to this day. I either have flat black or it appears too grey.

Yeah, I've found that dark blue as highlights work well. But there's a fine line between "black item with blue highlights" and "dark blue item".
Re: Creative Kobold's Painted Minis!
Done some very simple paintjobs the past couple of days:
Some D&L scenery bits:
A couple blocks of hay from a Mantic Terrain Crate:
A stack of large barrels from Reaper:
The inside piece of a Gelatinous Cube by Wizkids:
Some Reaper spiders from Bones 5:

Re: Creative Kobold's Painted Minis!
Mantic Terrain Crate nice it is something I do not have but have been looking into the mine tracks sets but man they are $$$
Love the colors on the spiders and the Gcube is awesome..... nice and close on the detail without bleeding into the ooze on the bones.

Re: Creative Kobold's Painted Minis!
Some more quick ones!
Wizkids Iron Golem:
D&D board game wolves:
Reaper Bones giant wolf:
Yeah, Terrain Crate's got a bunch of nice stuff. Some of the early stuff isn't that great when it comes to very thin pieces, but other than that it's good.
I don't have the mine tracks though, and no need for it as I got the Secret Weapon tiles with mine tracks.

Thank you!

Re: Creative Kobold's Painted Minis!
I really like your iron golem it looks way better than the one I painted a few years ago.
Re: Creative Kobold's Painted Minis!
Thanks! Like all the rest of these, the paint job for the Iron Golem is super simple, but just adding some accents does a ton to make it look more interesting.
Re: Creative Kobold's Painted Minis!
Finally got around to painting up the D&L Encounters swamp trees yesterday!
These were primed black, with an AP Oak Brown zenithal. I painted the soil/rock pieces with a different brown. Then I mixed beige, brown, gray, and white to make a brownish gray, and gave every piece a heavy drybrush of that all over. For the two broken tree pieces(stump and fallen log), I used that same colour on the inside wood with a Nuln Oil wash. Usually I'd use a regular beige with an Agrax Earthshade wash for this, but I wanted the colours more muted here. The same brownish gray was also used for the ropes holding the skulls, and they were white, then AP Pallid Bone speed paint over that.
Overall quite happy with how these turned out. This is from two sets, but only 11 standing trees. The twelfth tree I wanted to use the stump from, and then I turned the rest of it into the fallen log, with a bit of GS to fill the inside.
I also made sure not a single one of the trees were identical. The combination of branches is different for each. This did require a little bit extra work, but I think it's worth it.
I also removed the skulls for all of the trees aside from two, where one has both skulls still on, the other has only one. I think this makes them a bit more useful.

Re: Creative Kobold's Painted Minis!
These look great, and thanks for the directions on the paints used. I think trees and bark are difficult to get right, and I have some I need to paint in the future. Very complex but subtle colors.
Minis! Not talking donuts, skirts, or busses--just pure plastic (and pewter) joy, dude.
Re: Creative Kobold's Painted Minis!
Thanks, and you're welcome! The solution I've found that works great for wood is generally black in the recesses/shadows, dark brown as the base coat, and then a lighter colour drybrushed on top depending on the age and finish of the wood. A gray with a tiny amount of brown in it works great for any old wood. And then I just do variations on that, including how I paint these layers.
Re: Creative Kobold's Painted Minis!
Finally got around to painting up these three Reaper Bones 5 dragons yesterday:
Narthalyssk (Large)
Not the best pic, but really don't feel like taking another one. Dark green primer, bright green drybrush. Reaper Oxide Brown on the abdomen, which was then overbrushed with a beige. Red inside the mouth(not visible in pic) and white teeth. Eyes are just black and white. Black for claws.
Ildraedis the Devourer (Huge)
Gray AP primer with white zenithal. Abdomen painted in a gray and somewhat dark teal. Then everything drybrushed with white. A magenta AP Speedpaint for the inside of the mouth, and white for the teeth. Tiny bits of Nuln Oil on parts of the face. Reaper Mermaid Scale(teal metallic) mixed with a little bit of white for the eyes.
Snow on the base was simply painted white, given a Citadel Coelia Greenshade(teal) wash. I then used paper towel to sponge off most of the wash before it dried.
Kalanzar the Wicked (Huge)
Black AP primer with red zenithal. Drybrushed with red(wing membranes left as is). Abdomen given a base coat of Reaper Oxide Brown, then drybrushed with beige. Inside of the mouth base coated with Reaper Oxide Brown, then painted with AP Speedpaint Fire Giant Orange, and finally Reaper Sunrise Orange for some detailing. Reaper Bleached Linen(off white) for the teeth, black spikes and claws. Eyes are a dot of Reaper Sunrise Orange, with a tinier dot of Reaper Clear Yellow in them. Horns base coated with Reaper Brinewind Brown, drybrushed with Reaper Treasure Map.
The entire base was primed black, then given a coat of dark gray, then drybrushed in four steps of ever lighter variations of a combination of gray and beige. Then I used AP Speedpaint Hardened Leather to tint the soil brown. I used a dark gray metallic for the broken lance and shield, and gave those a coat of Nuln Oil.

Re: Creative Kobold's Painted Minis!
Thank you! The blends on the wings are simply the red zenithal, which I just left as is. Didn't touch the membranes of the wings with a brush, since I liked how they came out just from spraying.Yack wrote: ↑Mon Sep 18, 2023 1:30 pm wow your Kalanzar the Wicked is way nicer than mine!!! Yeah, I would probably call this an Old Red Dragon. Maybe even Very Old. Certainly not Ancient, but easily older than Adult. (I also feel it's too large for Mature Adult.)
Re: Creative Kobold's Painted Minis!
And a fourth dragon was finished yesterday! Actually started this one together with the previous three.
Amber Dragon (Large)
I painted it up to look like a Scalamagdrion, a lesser dragon, as I thought the sculpt fit quite well(including the small wings). Tried to combine description and the single piece of artwork that exist for the dragon type.
Primed it gray, then added stripes of metallic dark gray across the body. Drybrushed over that with a metallic silver mixed with a bit of white. Abdomen was left gray, but I gave it a Nuln Oil wash, as I wanted it to have just a slight colour variation from the rest of the body. Wing membranes were base coated with Reaper Treasure Map, then covered with Agrax Earthshade wash, and then I painted on the dark stripes using AP Speedpaint Hardened Leather while the wash was still wet. (Don't know if it'd make a lot of difference to let it dry, but that's how I did it.) Horns were also Treasure Map plus Hardened Leather. Spikes on the back of the next were painted in the dark gray metallic with the same drybrush as the body, and got a Nuln Oil wash. Inside of mouth was painted with an AP Speedpaints purple, face got a bit of Nuln Oil, teeth and eyes white. Base was also Hardened Leather, then a bit of Reaper Brinewind Brown for the stones.
