Re: Best of the Best Discussion: Night Below
Apart from having potentially 1 of the worst minis ever imo (Guard of Mithral Hall), I think this is a decent set, with 58/60 being keepers, and several epic “must have” minis... but 2 or 3 fails.
FROST GIANT JARL – To this day, the best Frost Giant ever made imo. The sword alone is a campaign hook! Shame it is large and not huge.
ORC BANEBREAK RIDER – No comment needed. Perfect boss fight or mid level BBEG
LADY VOL – Amazing all around. Another mini worthy of basing a campaign on.
The new Lady Vol mini from Rising From the Last War set is embarrassing compared to this.
HONORABLE MENTION
BRASS GOLEM – Great sculpt. I have 4 of these and use them LOTS. Sometimes I use them as golems, but mostly I have them as statues; sometimes they come alive, sometimes they are traps, but usually they do nothing but make the players nervous
One time I even made it a mimic and swapped it with a large otyugh mini when it attacked.
DIGESTER – The only 1 of this mini ever made, and it is fairly well done!
PRISONER – For table time alone, 1dozen of these minis wouldn’t go to waste.
ICE MEPHIT – Another simple mini that hits the table all the time. Mephits, elements, golems, Fey… works for lots of creatures.

GNOLL CLAW FIGHTER - Recently got this mini, and I like it a lot! It looks great, and as an added bonus it's nice to have a Gnoll not holding any weapons.

LADY VOL - Very well designed, and looks well painted! I find her to have quite the imposing look here.

DARKMANTLE - Easily my favourite Darkmantle mini!

HONORABLE MENTIONS
Ice Mephit - Looks great, and very useful!
Kobold Trapmaker - Not great as a Common, as the pose makes it look weird to have multiples of. But otherwise a very unique kobold mini!
Orc Banebreak Rider - Just a really cool and unique combination of rider and mount, and really well done at that!
Bluespawn Ambusher - This little guy is a super practical mini, as it can easily be proxied for any medium sized, lizard or draconic creature.

My votes went to these three:

Honorable mention to Raistlin whom I am using as my character in a Dungeon Crawl Classics campaign.

Disclamer: I prefer black bases, and as such have painted many clear bases black. Pictures of my collection will reflect this, varying from the original way the mini was produced.

Good call on the wraith. Such a staple of the genre and a good sculpt.

This set was kind of underwhelming.
I will add my vote to the mentions of the FG Jarl and Orc on the Rhino. The dread wraith makes for an excellent Nazgul was well so I like that one!

There is none higher.

Re: Best of the Best Discussion: Night Below
I learned respect for Dread Wraiths when one of my players drew the Death card from a Deck of Many Things… So did the player, actually.
Sidebar: I just recently got the new Deck of Many Things from Wizards of the Coast and I was showing it to my group. I mentioned how with the 44 additional cards it significantly reduced the chances of pulling the Skull (new name for Death) card. The player who had drawn the Death card in an earlier campaign told me he would never draw from the Deck of Many Things again. I tried to reason with him about it and eventually fanned out the cards and had him pull one to prove how unlikely it was now. You guessed it, he pulled the Skull card on the first try. I may have wasted my money on the new Deck of Many Things, as I don’t see my players ever agreeing to use it.

But now the rest of the team is safe. Clearly they need to encourage him to pull first.berk the black wrote: ↑Thu Mar 07, 2024 10:52 amI learned respect for Dread Wraiths when one of my players drew the Death card from a Deck of Many Things… So did the player, actually.

Re: Best of the Best Discussion: Night Below
One of my favourite sets, always been a huge fan (minus the white dust).
I have a top 7-8 of which I could easily name A-C today and D-F the next... no, wait, I could not drop the Jarl. Many of the miniatures that I like here have been praised already, but I'll add Clawborn Scorrow* and the awesome Shadow to the list. Also, I think Assassin is a fine figure, as well as Shadowbane Inquisitor. Large Chaos Beast is a nice sculpt with plenty of use.
* Took my vote today, alongside FGJ and Banebreak.
Guard of the Mithral Hall sure is a stinker. I use it as a Half-Dwarf in my campaign.

Shadowbane Inquisitor is one of my favorite minis ever and my #1 Paladin class miniature.
As an anecdote, I bought it from Plastic Finn and I liked it so much, that I bought an extra as a present for my brother (he's a big RPG fan but not a mini collector).

Re: Best of the Best Discussion: Night Below
Looking through Night Below, surprisingly I have never owned a single one of these minis. Closest I came was having the version of Wulfgar that came with Icingdeath. That's a fun, evocative miniature. I would love to get my hands on a couple of those Brass Golems.
