I can’t imagine that many people are clamoring for Modrons. I like them, and I have a small Modron Army, but they do seem a bit contrived. Look at what the first edition fiend folio depicted them as:

Image

They’re basically just geometric shapes. I remember when I first got the original Fiend Folio how lame I thought these were. I figured some gamer was looking at his dice and thought “I can make a monster out of these”.

2nd edition did a lot to improve on them, including the planescape setting to help explain their existence. The poster that shows the heirarchy and numbers is great.

3rd edition dropped them altogether, although by then I felt that was a mistake. Formians just weren’t a suitable replacement. I’m glad Dragon Magazine (Issue 354) saw fit to reintroduce them to 3rd edition. Placing both of them and Formians on Mechanis added even more interesting flavor to that plane.
Disclamer: I prefer black bases, and as such have painted many clear bases black. Pictures of my collection will reflect this, varying from the original way the mini was produced.

The whole idea with the 1E Modrons was that the plane of absolute law was going to be rigid geometry as well, as non-Euclidean shapes are chaotic. It's only later editions where they went Clockwork.

There was always this sense in 1E that each alignment was to the max. Chaotic Neutral wasn't just a little Chaotic, it was the Joker on LSD and Red Bull Chaotic. While Lawful Good Paladins could be obnoxious, it was the Lawful Neutral toons that could really ruin your day.

I always loved the concept of Modrons - that the ultimate embodiment of Law would be geometric robots, with every decision ruled by pure logic. That tracks.

I still feel like oozes should be the main representatives of Chaos, not the Slaadi. Oozes are so entropic.

Let’s just say I grew to embrace them. The initial sell wasn’t engaging. I am very happy now to be able to sport a decent Modron warband, I really thought Modron would never be made in the PPM line. In fact, I remember back in the DDM era some of the more talented collectors making homemade Modron.

I’m a bit perturbed about the Tridrone being rare, but I feel I’ve got good coverage otherwise for the base Modrons. Nope, not even close to enough for a march, but still about as many as I have room for in my collection.

It just goes to show there is good coverage by Wizkids on the Modron front. What we need now are some of the Hierach Modrons as bosses and Mechanus will be covered. I already have a ton of Formians and Inevitables (although I’d really like a Zelekut still).

I have to admit I don’t really even get Modrons, at least I don’t get what’s cool about them. I like the look more than I used to, admittedly, but I don’t want to take up valuable space with them so I sell off the ones I get from packs. I can always get Nolzur’s if I change my mind of course. But, that said, dang! That’s definitely enough for a March in my book. You probably are in the top few percent of Modron owners worldwide. :)

Love Modrons thought yes crazy in the AD&D days but man... March of the Modrons is a classic and plus just fun to throw and confuse a party with all the basic law and this is what I do. Glad to see them finally hitting mini form I am all for them to all to be done at some point.

Modrons to me are classic like devils and demons but on the side of Mechanus these crazy shaped law beings rule!

I need to triple or at least double my amount with unpainted!
Note to self add tons on my next unpainted order....

and YES to the Zelekut want!

Yup. It’s not the 1e modrons that people love. It’s the Tony DiTerlizzi 2e ones that drive that nostalgic desire.

Among its many issues, one of the worst most discussed parts of 4e when it came out was the way it changed the outer planes, mechanics among them. I remember a lot of people strongly disliking the removal of modrons and their replacement with inevitables.

And, while I’m also not sure of 5e combining the two planar races (modrons and inevitables), I know I’ll be getting more than a few of the W18 packs to go with my slowly growing army of modrons!

Now all we need are Archons, Demodands, Vaporighu, Guardinals, and Rilmani to round things out!

I like the 1E Modron Hierarchs. The base Modrons, not so much, except that super cute little tridrone!

I'm personally jazzed about the Modrons. It's nice to have the five base units available now. Thats one things thats been putting me off. Now I can grab 4-6 of each, batch paint, and have a nice little Modron Warband without having to wait for an expensive PPM Warband box set.
