PFB Maze of Death: Ice Devils Repaint

Post by Guyra »

I had four Ice Devils from the Pathfinder Battles: Maze of Death set. Cool sculpt, incredibly boring paintjob. (The entire mini is literally just a single colour, a barely visible, black wash, and black eyes. Even the weapon is the same colour.)

During one of the "best of the best" polls we've had, I noticed the Ice Devils from the Blood War and Against the Giants sets:

So I decided to repaint the PFB ones I had based on those old DDM versions, and ended up with this:

Gave them a base colour of Reaper Clouded Sea (09662), second layer of Reaper Aquamarine Blue (09678) using a heavy drybrush, and a top down drybrush of titanium white craft paint.

Eyes were painted with Reaper Oxide Yellow (09331), then a smaller oval inside with a mix of that and Army Painter Angelic Yellow (D&D range), then a small, third oval inside of that with AP Angelic Yellow again mixed with just a small bit of the Reaper Oxide Yellow.

Spear shaft is just black craft paint. Spear shaft was painted using Army Painter Azure Magic (Metallic Colors Paint Set) with a heavy drybrush of titanium white.

man...that's on hell of an upgrade! The sculpt was really good (and much cheaper than the DDM versions to obtain) but let down by the almost monochrome paint scheme. Especially appreciate the details on the paint colors and techniques.

I agree, they look much better with your repaints. Well done. On top os being monochrome, they were a bit too on the blue-greenish side. And the spear shaft non being painted was unforgivable, it just underscored that they really weren’t painted much. I think your effort was worth while because the Legion Ice Devils were way to small, even though they looked pretty good otherwise (and were the only ones with armor). So making these Maze of Death versions more useable will help increase your ranks of table ready Ice Devils.
Disclamer: I prefer black bases, and as such have painted many clear bases black. Pictures of my collection will reflect this, varying from the original way the mini was produced.

Haha! Thank you! ;)

Yeah, the monochrome paint scheme was actually irritating me every time I looked at those minis.

Thank you! :) Yeah, they absolutely should've at the very least painted up the spear. :?

I do kind of want some Legion Ice Devils as well. How much smaller are they? You wouldn't happen to have a comparison photo of the four(?) different PPM Ice Devils, would you? :)

Well done Guyra! That’s a great improvement over the stock ones.

Mine are still sitting there laughing at me…

I found a couple of photos from way back. Probably from when the Legion Devil came out:

Looks great—the eye color makes them pop compared to the originals.

Thank you, those pics are perfect! :D

Yeah, I definitely see what you mean about the Legion Ice Devil being quite a bit smaller. But the armor and such is pretty cool. I'll have to think about those.

Both the other two are quite nicely sized. The BW one has a much different hue than I imagined it would, but the AtG is pretty much what I had in mind when I painted up my PF ones. (Even if the end result isn't exactly the same.) Might have to get one to use as a "squad leader". ;)

Thank you! :D

Thanks! Yeah, that alone did a lot, for sure! :)
