Nolzur's with easily removeable skateboards

Post by MyriadTabletop »

So! I received a Marlilith in today, and during inspection I found out that the skateboard on this particular sculpt could actually be very easily removed! It appears it was just double-pegged and then further secured by the primer. But a little flexing and some very light knife work and it came off incredibly cleanly and is basically ready for rebasing.

Needless to say I'm quite happy. I know that I've intentionally avoided many Nolzurs pieces that I may have otherwise wanted because of the skateboard, so I figured I would create thread for anyone else to add other Nolzurs pieces that can have their skateboards plucked off and the piece rebased easily (without gouging and major surgery).

Great thread idea!

I’ll try to remember to post here whenever I remove a skateboard especially easily. I’ve removed many skateboards in the Nolzur’s and Deep Cuts lines, but I don’t remember which were easy at the moment.

Skateboards are tumors, but even the malignant ones can be removed with patience—I’ve been known to remove skateboards from metal minis if the pose permits it. Just today I removed the large skateboard from a Nolzur’s Boneclaw (not an easy one, because as is all too common, that figure’s feet are sculpted onto the skateboard so removing the skateboard entirely will also remove the feet; in that case you have to remove the skateboard carefully while carving out the feet and then shave off the skateboard layer below the feet).

I wonder if a lot of these minis are made that way. Where the mini can be put on a skateboard or a base without having to change the mold. I’m curious if the PPM one has the same sockets on the bottom.
Disclamer: I prefer black bases, and as such have painted many clear bases black. Pictures of my collection will reflect this, varying from the original way the mini was produced.

I hear you. I have a half dozen Gnoll Witherlings that I'm very excited to paint, but their skeleton bone feet and legs would, unfortunately, offer very little support if I carved them off their skateboards.

They're gorgeous pieces though, and they were on the short list of skateboard exceptions. As soon as we get a PPM of them though... off to the Sell Pile they go!

I picked up the deep cuts giant frogs and one of them comes separate from the skateboard in the box.

If you’re worried about the connections on small parts, once the “skateboards” are removed, you’re doing it wrong.

Make sure you use a sharp tool to trim the skateboard off. Ensure there is a flat spot on the feet/bottom/whatever to bond to the base.

Rough up your flat spot. I like to do a crosshatch pattern with a sharp hobby knife. This will increase the bonding area.

Use the right glue. Not all superglues are equal. I recommend Loctite plastic formula for almost all miniatures plastic. It doesn’t just stick the surfaces together, it bonds them together.

Now resins and Reapers new 3D print bones material…that’s trickier, but doable. You just need to be extra careful not to break the mini in the process.

I only leave the skateboards on now when I’m trying for extra night to make minis from different lines blend in better or when I’m feeling particularly lazy.
