Worst of the Worst Discussion - Lords of Madness
Re: Worst of the Worst Discussion - Lords of Madness
This is a difficult set to pick bad ones from! This set has a high level of quality to it, in my eyes.
Blood Fiend - Probably more the design of the creature than the actual mini, but I just don't like it.

Brain in a Jar - It's not a bad attempt at what it's going for, I just think it could've been done better.

Shadar-Kai Warrior - Just looks a bit silly to me.

Pretty good set, so I only have two votes.

Arcane Portal - Love the idea of a portal mini, but the execution here is just bad. It looks like there's candy pasted to the side of the portal instead of it radiating energy.

Skeleton - such a just disappointing sculpt.

I use that portal as one that Mindflayers created. Each little “piece of candy” is actually an eyeball that allows the creature on the other side to see 360 degrees around the portal.
Disclamer: I prefer black bases, and as such have painted many clear bases black. Pictures of my collection will reflect this, varying from the original way the mini was produced.

Can I ask what you dislike about that Skeleton? No argument from me, it’s just personal taste, but it’s actually a favorite Skeleton of mine and maybe the only DDM I still have multiples of. To me I love the slouching but still combat ready pose, perfect for a low level undead in my eyes.deadsmurf wrote: ↑Wed Jun 05, 2024 11:50 am Pretty good set, so I only have two votes.

Edit: Voting for Shadar-Kai warrior. Maybe it’s the fault of the artist who drew it in the first place, but it just looks terrible in hand.

Yeah can't put my finger on why I don't like it - just don't. It's not egregiously bad, I think I have a few of them too - they're a good chunk of my skeletons crew, and I have no plans for getting rid of them, just don't like them.

Sometimes you just don't vibe with the aesthetics of a design, and that's all there is to it. I certainly have a few of those types of minis, myself.

I still have about 4-5 unsold Shadar-Kai Warriors. Nobody wants these guys, in general... I mean they are just emo goth white skinned people, they are incredibly 2000s... Now they got reimagined as Elves in 5E but that did not make them more popular.
I almost included the Neogi Slaver, because its head looks like it got a door slammed on it from both sides and is 2-dimnesional. But it came at a time where we had absolutely no Neogi minis anywhere, and you need a lot of them for any Spelljammer setting, so I was happy to have them - the IotR Spelljammer uncommons and the MM3 Rare are a lot better of course.
The Deva fanatic gets my second vote because... like WTF is that thing, even? Looks like an angry chinese mandarin or kabuki actor with fake wings. Does not resemble any Deva, Movanic or Monadic or Astral, at all.
And then we have Mr. "Jell-o feet" Astral Giant. The concept was not bad, the execution was lacking.
I could also include a LOT of the Huge Uncommons... not that they were bad, you just never going to need 4-5 Rime Hounds, Feymire Crocodiles or Iron Golem Juggernaughts.
And I mean, compare the Trihorn Behemoth and the S&S Triceratops. This guy looks like it came from the Herculoids cartoon. I am surprised about anyone including the Skeleton here...at the time we lacked generic sword/shield armored Skeleton minis so badly, I was once paid 10$ for each extra Skeleton in a trade. And an interesting factoid, there is an axe variant of this mini in Dungeon Command! And it is not even a bad pose or design. Like the Town Guard, it was the standout common of this set back then. The Astral Gate is an amazing effect, even if it has a base. Just put it behind any summoned creature! Also to me the rim of the portal always looked like it is made out of crystals.
And I like the Brain in a Jar too. Yeah the Fizban's one is better, but then this was still a hand-sculpted piece, they did pretty well considering the time.
Overall this set finally gave us a lot of rare monsters and even Archdevils I never thought to see - can you believe this was the first Will-O' the Wisp mini ever? Or that we would get a Spell Weaver? It's especially sad to me that this was the last set WotC made. I am curious if they ever planned further sets... and whether any of those minis ended up in Dungeon Command or the Dragon Collector set instead.
