It's not my idea - several people had this theory before when we learned the set is oddly just 42 minis and there are three premiums, 2 being Huge.

It's clear that is what happened. They probably ended up with 2 huges and decided to make it standard boxes.

Both "premiums" should have been $10 less.

If they were big rares in the set mamlambo would go for $30 and the cloud dragon $40 in the singles market.

Usually the singles market ends up overpriced which makes something like the Waterdeep box sets actually worthwhile in comparison to buying rares. This is the opposite.

My FLGS has singles of Mwangi and they are all so cheap. The most expensive one is $20 and most rares are $10. It probably isn't worth it to them to even stock the singles.

And you nailed the only reason I keep my Paizo battles sub for the moment. 30% off of those premiums make them within the range of what I feel I am willing to pay, top most, for the premium mini's. I miss the days when we got them for like 10$ with the purchase of a case but I felt like I was robbing someone at that price point.

Singles are still where the profit comes from for people who sell these. I don't know what the distributor cost of a case is but I can't imagine it is much cheaper than what we pay as subscribers considering Miniature Market and GN are selling their cases at just about the same cost as what a subscriber pays now.

I've sold off singles in the past, but it's just time consuming so I said screw it. Now when I die whoever inherits my mini's collection is going to curse my name and have to decide what to do with a bajillion mini's.... not to mention the board game collection :D

I assume Paizo gets their cut from all the sales Wizkids make, because it feels rather strange this was done - and no Icons of the Realms sets have done this ever.
And this also makes getting a case rather unnecessary, since you'd get 2 extra Rares.

I'm not sure that the singles market actually is overpriced.

About a year ago as part of a thread on the best way to complete an Icons line, I checked how much it would cost to complete most of them through the singles market, using Troll and Toad as my basis (simply because that was my preferred vendor, RIP). I discovered that the cost of a complete Icons set ranged from around $280-380 on the singles market.

That is much cheaper than a case, though you don't get all the duplicate figures that come in a case. So while it is arguable which is better value, it didn't strike me that the singles market was unreasonable.

So, anyone has Ravenloft case results?
The CE GallantGoblin got makes it seem that unlike in Witchlight, only minis #01-#13 are Commons, above that it is Uncommons. So I wonder if you had any weird "2 Uncommons per booster" finds like I had with Witchlight.

I suppose it depends on goals.

I don't care about completing anything, I just want good minis.

The Waterdeep Box 1 minis cost a lot less than buying their equivalents from previous sets and they look a lot better.

I'm not spending $30+ on a Beholder or Mind Flayer.

I get that attitude, yeah. If you just need "a" Mind Flayer or Beholder, and not a specific mini, the WDH Set 1 is simply unbeatable in pricing.
But since I have been collecting minis for a long time and say, I am still missing Shushluth, Archvillain from War Drums, I can't say that the high price that mini goes for is unreasonable because there are now cheaper other Mind Flayer minis. If you want a particular Rare, you need to be prepared for high prices. With Xanathar though, I expect the MM2 and WDH Rares will decrease in price because they are not just "another Beholder", they are the exact same design, in different poses. And as you said, the new mini even has better paint apps.

The thing is, while T&T and MM sometimes have much cheaper prices on Rares, said Rares are also sold out and have been so for months. I found this out the hard way when I dealt with Ryan of RPGLocker, who complained that when we traded, I was using the MM prices for minis, which were more expensive or cheaper than his prices, respectively.
That's why I abandoned to use T&T and MM as the "etalons" and now use an average of Ebay's search sold prices to set the prices of the minis I trade and sell. It is much closer to the reality. MM for example, never updates the prices of minis they have been out of stock for ages, and they no longer reflect the current value of these minis.

I have not seen anyone else post case results for this set, so here you go, my results per brick!

D&D Icons of the Realms Set 22: Van Richten's Guide to Ravenloft

Observations:
-Some boosters by default have no bubble inside, these include those where the "Large Uncommon" is Ivan & Ivana, and the ones with the Bodytaker Plant. The latter is thus, very easy to locate as it is the second heaviest mini in the set, but is not nearly as heavy (300 grams) as the Zombie Clot, and also rattles in the box.
-Luckily ALL my Bodytaker Plants arrived unscathed, despite being just wrapped in bubble wrap.
-Chakuna is very prone to bending, 2 of the 4 I have bend to the side. Same goes with the Nosferatu who bends backwards.
-The Headless Monster's heads come in a small bubble wrap bag, taped over, so careful not to throw it out with the packaging!
-Brick #1 had a booster missing one Common, only came with 2 Mediums.
-Brick #3 had a booster with 2 Medium Uncommons, one replacing a Common - the Death Knight and Gallows Speaker in one box.

-I can provide per booster results too to prove it, basically minis #14, #15 and #16 are Uncommons, not Commons as the Collector's Guide given with the CE says - they always came with 2 Commons or 1 Common and 1 Rare.
-As there are 9 Medium Rares, you can expect one brick to have 4 Rares, not 3.
-There are some universal "pairings" that I have noted below, meaning some minis always come together in one booster.
--Ivan and Ivana come together as the "Large Uncommon" of the booster, meaning such boosters have 3 Uncommons and 2 Commons (or 1 Common and a Rare).
--Chakuna and the Displacer Beast always come together, meaning such boosters have 1 Large Uncommon, 2 Medium Uncommons and 2 Commons (or 1 Common and 1 Rare).
--The Dullahan comes with the Nightmare (and an extra set of riding legs/saddle in a small bubble wrap bag), replacing the Large Uncommon of that booster. Meaning such boosters have 1 Large Rare, 1 Medium Rare, 1 Uncommon and 2 Commons.
--Lord Godefroy and the 3 Thug Ghosts always come together as one "Large" Rare. Such boosters have a whooping SEVEN minis, 4 Medium Rares, 1 Medium Uncommon and 2 Commons.

Boneyard case report, after letting the box sit for a year and a half. Three minis were damaged: an Ogre Zombie and a Skittering Horror had separated from their bases and the Mummy Lord's left arm had broken off. All were repairable.

Like in another report, one of the Sibriex's chains was unglued. I think it's supposed to be loose. Mordenkainen's Monsters says it can make 3 chain attacks per round. This is an independent monster, not something kept chained up.

I didn't track the entire case, but my Monsters of the multiverse had 2 Molydeus and 0 Drow Matron Mother. Pretty sure it was a QC error as the first 2 boosters had Molydeus and the same 3 other figures.
There is none higher.

Yeah, my case had 2 Blackguards as well, but luckily I did not miss other Rares.
Look at it on the bright side, you can likely buy 2 Matron Mothers by selling the extra Molydeus! ;)

Almost forgot to post my Fizban's case results!
This was probably my most "perfect" case yet - as in, I got almost the same amount of everything. Due to the 2 Superboosters per brick, of course we get about 6 minis less, meaning less Medium Uncommons and Commons. This is only an issue with the lower level Draconians and minis like the Hydroloth, of which I could have used more. But the set otherwise has an almost perfect rarity ratio. Also, first Common Dragons ever, as far as I recall, we never had Common Wyrmlings or Huge sized Uncommon Dragons before (unless we count the Visible Huges in LE).
Quality wise, also everything was perfect, there are some bent minis but nothing was broken. The paint quality is also amazing, even on the tiny ones like the Dragon Speaker, and these Kobolds are some of my favourite molds so far, I kept 2 of the Rogue and the Zombie.

Re: Case Results Report Thread

Post by BBShockwave »

Better late than never, my D&D Icons of the Realms - Mordenkainen Presents: Monsters of the Multiverse case results!

I feel, as nice as it is to have this many Large/Huge Uncommons, Wizkids should go back and keep the number at 8 only. With 10 of these in the set, and only 7 slots per brick, you can end up with only 2 of certain Large/Huge minis you'd need 3-4 of, and 3-4 of the ones you only need 1 of. As it happened with me in this - I could have used more Giant Striders and Howlers, and less Orthons (who in my read of their description are solitary bounty hunter Devils) and Outhouse Mimics.
A lot more Rares than usual also meant often, there were as many as 4 Rares in a brick, often there being 2 Large/Huge Rares in a brick, meaning even less Large/Huge Uncommons than 7. I think that's because of the Gauth actually being considered to be a Medium mini on a Large base.
All this resulted in something that never occurred to me before, that I got only 1 out of an Uncommon, meaning it might as well be a Rare. Luckily it was the pink haired Goblin lady whom I did not need more of.
And similar to my Witchlight brick, I also got a case of 2 Orthons in the same brick, further reducing the number of different Large Uncommons.

My case also had some quite weird packaging errors. Almost every brick had a booster packed with not one but two Medium Uncommons. Unfortunately for me, those extras were usually the Oinoloth and the Dybbuk, which are worth the least on the secondary market. This however, meant less Commons - I only had 5 of two Commons, which is quite unusual in a case.
There was also a strange mis-packing error - on booster had no Medium Uncommon and had 2 of the same Medium Rare, the Blackguard.

Quality-wise, nothing broken or ruined, thankfully. One Mimic had the door really bent out of shape - odd as the door was closed - but that could be fixed with hot and cold water. The Molydeus arrived rattling in the booster, having come off the base, there seems to have been very little glue applied. Luckily, nothing was broken.
No huge paint issues either.
