Character mini bases
Character mini bases
I wasn't sure where to ask this, but felt like this would be an accurate place. I'm curious, do you keep the player character bases the same color as all the other miniatures or do you have them as a different "key" color to help identify them among the other models on the battlemap? Thanks in advance for any input!

Re: Character mini bases
All my bases are black, so maybe I’m not the right person to answer. However I have wrapped a base with thin vinyl tape so that a remote player could identify themselves a bit easier. My camera is at a fixed point on the table, so sometimes the minis get further away from it and can become easier to mis-identify.
Disclamer: I prefer black bases, and as such have painted many clear bases black. Pictures of my collection will reflect this, varying from the original way the mini was produced.
Re: Character mini bases
Like Berk, I usually just keep the bases black as well. However, I have a few times used coloured base rings, which the miniature base just "slots into":
The ones I got are plastic and came with some board game. But I'm sure you can also get them separately in other materials.
The main downside is, of course, that they add a tiny bit of extra width to the base.

Black by default , but if it came on a clear I keep it clear so its either or.... but anything unpainted/ painted by me or made into a mini is black.

I am with Yak, base stays the same color. But if I paint it I usually will add texture/terrain to the base especially the Nolzur's line with the skateboards, and if it has none than black base.

Re: Character mini bases
Bases are a combination of black and clear for me. I painted the clear bases black for a brief period but then realized I'm fighting an ongoing, upward, non-stop battle. However, all my character PC minis follow with the black bases and if clear are painted. I like the consistency with the PC characters.
I'm not sure why there should be a problem identifying PC minis if it's an ongoing campaign? If it's a "one-shot" or something similar I guess I can understand.

When everyone is at the table, I agree 100%. But even with the fantastic cameras on phones these days and the remote player streaming the game to an 80” TV, the action sometimes moves far enough away from the camera to make things difficult. Remote play for a single player creates several problems, this only being one. The other most pressing issue is hearing what is going on at the table when multiple people are talking at the same time. I purchased a wireless conference device, which has helped some, both for the remote player and those that are present.arbados wrote: ↑Fri Jun 27, 2025 12:41 am Bases are a combination of black and clear for me. I still prefer everyone to playnin person, but we’ve these steps and more to accomodate the occassional need for remote play. We miss enough sessions due to scheduling conflicts that this helps alleviate things a bit.

Would love to hear more about your setup as we play often play remotely and struggle with this exact problem. I'd love to use terrain and miniatures remotely but hard to get a good perspective where people viewing on camera can tell what is going on. Usually resorts in us just using whiteboard feature of zoomberk the black wrote: ↑Fri Jun 27, 2025 5:30 amWhen everyone is at the table, I agree 100%. This is the iPad stand I use. We were using a phone, but the iPad presents a much larger image of the remote player for the rest of us to see, so we went with it. It may be a slight downgrade in the camera, it’s hard for me to tell since I’m never the remote player. The stand handles tilting and swiveling the iPad, but it usually remains anchored to a single spot at the table. The players help focus it wherever the action is, but if the battle moves to a far corner of the table it takes a lot more coaching to help the remote player. I have something similar for my iPhone, and it also gets anchored to a single spot. I have a charging hub on the bottom of the tabletop, so whatever device is being used can remain charged.KingOfVrock wrote: ↑Mon Jun 30, 2025 11:53 amWould love to hear more about your setup as we play often play remotely and struggle with this exact problem. I use Zoom as the software, and I upgrade to the business version so the call wouldn’t drop after an hour or whatever time limit Zoom set on the free version. It also made it easier to schedule and set up the calls.
Here is the conference speaker I got. I chose it because it was supposed to be able to handle multiple people talking at the same time better. It’s hard for me to tell how well it really works, because there’s alway only one person on the other side for me, but the players that have experienced it said it is definitely a step up from just a phone or iPad microphone. It is definitely easier to hear the remote player, even when everyone is talking. It’s bluetooth, so setup is easy and it can be moved around the table, but we haven’t had to move it yet. I don’t know if I can recommend this particular model over the many other conference speakers out there, but it seems to work well and has not been a problem during the game sessions.
