Best of the Best (Aberrations)
Best of the Best (Aberrations)
I figured it had been sufficiently long enough to post the next in the list.
Aberrations

If you haven’t yet you need to watch Guyra open up a case of Aberrations last year, as well as 12 other boosters during the holidays.

He also took some great pictures of the miniatures that are posted

This set has great hits and real misses.
My top mini is 39- Mind Flayer Telepath
This mini is perfectly menacing and creepy. When players encounter it on the table they know the fight just turned against them.
https://www.minisgallery.com/index.php? ... 20Telepath
But I also really like the Adventuring Wizard and the Gibbering Mouther.

Re: Best of the Best ( Aberrations )
Man, this set is close to my heart!
I'm kind of going back and forth on what minis in this set I like the absolute most. While there certainly is a bunch I'm not too fond of here, there's also a bunch I really, really like.
The Mind Flayer Telepath is probably my favorite Mind Flayer mini ever. Ryld Argith and the Warforged Hero are also super cool characters! So is the Frenzied Barbarian! I also really like that the set has a Gnoll Skeleton, and the Sahuagin Ranger and Yuan-Ti Abomination are another couple of minis I really like in this set.
However, I think I'll have to give it to the Kobold Sorcerer for this one! I mean, obviously I love kobolds. But I don't think another so unique kobold sculpt exists - at least not in any of the official lines. And it's just super cool!

Man, thanks for linking to my rather lengthy unboxing! It was a lot to unbox, though! But super fun!Chordof3 wrote: ↑Fri May 15, 2020 7:13 am If you haven’t yet you need to watch Guyra open up a case of Aberrations last year, as well as 12 other boosters during the holidays.

Re: Best of the Best ( Aberrations )
The Sahuagin Ranger is my favorite of this set. But there certainly are many others that are a close second. I have a ton of man-at-arms minis as my base for armies, the mindflayer telepath is a really solid mindflayer, even with all that has come out come out since.

Disclamer: I prefer black bases, and as such have painted many clear bases black. Pictures of my collection will reflect this, varying from the original way the mini was produced.
Re: Best of the Best ( Aberrations )
There are sooo many good miniatures in this set - it was the first one I bought a significant amount (I think I got a case) - first set with an large uncommon.
The Sahuagin Ranger mentioned already is great, but also just so many just really useful basic minis in this set.
Hill Dwarf Warrior is super useful.

Man-at-Arms has gotten a ton of use at my table

So has the Elf Warrior

The Kobold Champion

Kobold Sorcerer

Gnoll

and more for commons and uncommons
But then as an Eberron fan, there are some amazing options -
The Exorcist of the Silver Flame

Warforged Hero

Longtooth Barbarian

Sharn Cutthroat

Valenar Commander

and one I have like 10 of them so my players can indiscriminately kill some nazi analogs - Emerald Claw Soldier

Re: Best of the Best ( Aberrations )
Ah, Aberrations - a great utilitarian set.
Some great figures here, as has already been mentioned. Loved the MF Telepath. I still find the Emerald Claw soldier a good guard/cleric/ canon fodder type figure. The Achaierai and the Myconid were fantastic, never seen before figures.
But the best of the bunch, in reverse order are
3) The Yuan Ti abomination - my players wet themselves when I placed this figure on the table. Fantastic figure.
2) The Hook Horror. Now it took me a while to feel the love for this chap. He certainly didn't look the way *I* thought Hook Horrors looked, too dark, too Ravenlofty. Then it hit me. He is used now as he was then, as a Vampiric Hook horror. Again, trouser wetting players
But the overall winner out of this set has to be the one that I use regularly again and again - in multiples.
The Sahuagin Ranger. He is, imho, by far the best Sahuagin, even nowadays!
Thank you for taking the time to read this

Re: Best of the Best ( Aberrations )
It's wonderful seeing all the photos and numerous choices but this is supposed to be "THE BEST". To me that means 1 CHOICE so stick to one choice and photo and maybe adding other mentions in the text. No need for photos of all the others. Just me but what the hell. Now let me consider my Best - it will be 1 I assure you. I remember my father telling me when younger "make decisions and not wallow amongst uncertainty. Make a choice!". I do that now and hope the rest of you can as well.
Achaierai. Nothing like it ever produced and when I saw the colors back in the day I was overwhelmed. Great mini! The reality, whether you want to admit it or not, is that monster's will win above humanoids. There's only so much you can do with a human, elf, dwarf or gnome mini. There are certainly great ones out there but in a set there are also unbelievable monster minis which always have to rise above. Let's be honest here and not try to be an outlier in picking a non-monster. We all know what we really want and is usually the best. Just sayin'!

I agree in the sense that PC / humanoid minis are outliers when it comes to best of the best. But there are certain iconic hero minis that make this fantasy genre game what it is. They are the images we have in our heads that you just cant play D&D without. For me...that is the skullsplitter. I only need one... but I would be very let down if this mini did not exist.arbados wrote: ↑Fri May 15, 2020 11:09 pm The reality, whether you want to admit it or not, is that monster's will win above humanoids. Ah good, the behavioural police have turned up....
Arbados, unless it's hurting others or is illegal please do not tell others what you think they should do - never ends well. Personally I enjoy seeing others' thought processes laid out and the additional pictures help my aging memory.
Anyway, I agree your choice is an exceptional PPM.
When I was younger I criticised a group of people doing something I disagreed with. My Father said "People are free to do what they want. So long as it isn't illegal and doesn't harm anyone what's the problem?" He fought in WWII to ensure those freedoms. It's wonderful seeing all the photos and numerous choices but this is supposed to be "THE BEST". Re: Best of the Best ( Aberrations )
I just noticed that this set Aberrations (a departure from what is normal or expected...) obviously has a bunch of creatures of the Aberration type, but they also put that same theme/tone into a lot of the standard humanoid PC minis; most are very unique.
This set has some of the most unique PC minis out there. The more I see it, the more I think this is one of the top "all around" sets. Not much I would call "amazing" but nearly everything is a solid 7/10 and very usable minis.

Re: Best of the Best ( Aberrations )
That's a great action human mini and one that's been selected as a PC in a game of mine. Maybe moving forward I'll pick my overall favorite (which will most likely be a monster) and then pick my favorite human, elf, dwarf, gnome or half-elf of the set.

Re: Best of the Best (Aberrations)
My picks :

One of or the best mindlflayer to date

The best yuan-ti abomination to date (on a large base!). I hunted down this mini for a long time
Third pick was among Yuan-ti Halfblood Archer (a sucker for yuan-tis), Hook Horror (right colours and better than RoD version) but ultimately I went for a guy that I simply love for no reason

Your most honest under the hill dwarf, very sturdy and neatly sculpted. Works as the member of a clan but can work as a PC also. I've seen him picked often by players over far more flashier axe n' shield dwarf minis I have, he's just charismatic

Re: Best of the Best (Aberrations)
This set is the first bunch of D&D mini's I ever bought. Half Price Books had them, and I snagged a couple boxes. There really are a bunch of great mini's in this set. As a DM who ran a Rashemen-infused "Viking" setting for near a decade, this set had so many great and useful sculpts for me.
The Taer and the Mongrelfolk aren't great sculpts, but they were super useful, and I have about five of each of them. The Ice Troll was the first Troll I ever had (he was the Large in my first box, ever), and got lots of use over the years. The barbarian mini's were useful, as were the animal mini's... Just so much of it has been useful over the years.
I also ran Eberron as my first time DM'ing, and the Emerald Claw Soldier was great to have (one of the modules is titled Grasp of the Emerald Claw...) They still found a lot of use as guards up until the City Watch mini's from Dragon Heist.
I'm 3/4 of the way through Curse of the Crimson Throne, and have plans to run Red Hand of Doom next, so I've actually been picking up a bunch of this set more recently, in preparation for that. The Hobgoblin Bladebearers will see a lot of use, and I picked up the young Green Dragon for that same purpose.
In my last 14 years of gaming, the following mini's from this set have been used as PC's in my group:
Cleric of St. Cuthbert
Exorcist of the Silver Flame
Man-at-Arms (twice)
Aasimar Favored Soul
Elf Warrior
Sharn Cuththroat
Half-Elf Hexblade
Mongrelfolk
Skullsplitter
A great all-around set, and I don't even have a lot of the "better" things from it (the mind flayer, hook horror, or warforged hero, etc.)

Re: Best of the Best (Aberrations)
Sahuagin Ranger is the bomb and for me as the best sculpt so far for the creature.
I horded these when it first came out... something like 22 LOL
Kobold Sorcerer is another great one and have about 5 of them
Yuan-Ti Abomination I love also but I did find later on that if dropped it can snap apart at the tail. Easy to glue but is a fault.
Next would be in no order which I have used alot from this set.
Aasimar Favored Soul (use this as Lathander clerics)
Bariaur Ranger
Crow Shaman (great druid mini)
Ethereal Filcher
Wyvern (go to sculpt)
Achaierai
Destrachan
Fiendish Dire Weasel
Hook Horror (go to sculpt)
Half-Elf Hexblade (one of my players used him for years)
Med. Green Dragon
Myconid Guard
Chuul (my go to sculpt)
Gibbering Mouther
Fiendish Giant Praying Mantis
Gnoll (still my go to for Gnolls)
Taer
