Worst of the Worst - Aberrations
Re: Worst of the Worst - Aberrations
The absolute worst in this set to me, is the Carrion Tribe Barbarian! I've always found the design of this guy to be really, really bad.

Dishonorable mentions goes to the Ogre Zombie, with its disproportionate body, and the Aasimar Favored Soul for its silly pose.

Re: Worst of the Worst - Aberrations
For me:

Weird looking, doesn't resemble any ogre depictions of any edition, looks more like an overgrown pirate head, with that earring and goatee, on top of an unidentifiable creature. Too thin, too top-heavy, won't sit right despite numerous repositioning with heat/cold water. Even the weapon looks weird, why would a club only have spikes at 180 degrees instead of all around?
Kinda destroyed it
, but still a serviceable mini if you need many ogre zombies. I only got 2 zombie hulks but this might change when that savory sculpt from Nolzur's hits the market

I suppose this should be a simple black bear, smaller than the brown bear, but it looks too anthromorphic and the golden patterns (probably his celestial traits) make him too niche.

Not fair to pick this one because it's nicely executed. Still, very hard to find an actual use for it.

Very much agree with you on this one. It's a well made mini, but it's just that the creature type makes it see little to no use. Ever. Almost picked this as one of the two dishonorable mentions, myself.BadeaCelRau wrote: ↑Mon May 25, 2020 11:18 pm

Re: Worst of the Worst - Aberrations
Ogre Zombie The sculpt and shape is off. It looks a bit like it was modeled directly from a drawing, where the head and club were close up in the foreground and the body got small in the back to show distance. Or it was just born deformed.
Either way, it is just irritating to look at. Really bothers me.
Mountain Orc - Gorilla head is a bit over sized and bugs me a bit, but I get it...mountain orc...more wild. Weapon shaft is too skinny. Bends and prone to snap.
Flesh Golem Wish it was bigger. Really like it but too small. Less imposing.
Half-Illithid Lizardfolk Just the paint job on this one is poor. I touched it up and added a wash/dry brush...looks much better.
Dekanter Goblin - The paint/sculpt is flat. Bland.
Formian Warrior I know its an ant,,,,but come on! Maybe mine is just smoke faded but it just looks like red crap. I should try a repaint.
Adventuring Wizard - Id like to head from someone who owns it. I feel like the detail isnt there and size is off; especially when I compare to the Mam-at -Arms which is small.

Re: Worst of the Worst - Aberrations
I want to like this mini, I really want to: the pose, the clasic color scheme...but hell, yes, size is way off, too big.
Re: Worst of the Worst - Aberrations
Ogre Zombie was a joke not sure what they were thinking with the face and hair
Valenar Commander man this could of been super great and unique but no they needed to shrink him!
I was going to choose the mind flayer as he is super thin and small but I went with Silent Wolf Goblin as I do not need a ton of red skinned goblins... too bad as it was a nice sculpt.

I may have different criteria, based on minis I have had trouble with (bending, breaking) but I chose the kobold champion because even among kobolds, this one is tiny and hardly looks like a champion.

Re: Worst of the Worst - Aberrations
The stand outs for me were:
The Celestial Black Bear and the Ogre Zombie earned my votes for all the same reasons everyone has already identified. The Ogre Zombie was a particularly missed opportunity. I really like seeing undead variants, but this was a very poor sculpting attempt at an zombie ogre -- in my opinion it does not look like any type of ogre at all.

1. Ogre Zombie
Great idea ruined by a derpy face and spindly body.
2. Celestial Black Bear
A medium bear with golden fur - no thanks.
3. Dekanter Goblin
Looks stupid.

Re: Worst of the Worst - Aberrations
I completely agree with BadeaCelRau's 3 picks here.
I don't agree with the negative comments on the Carrion Tribe Barbarian and Kobold Champion, though.
The Carrion Tribe Barbarian is one of the few minis that can be used to represent barbarian enemies. WotC loves to put Uthgardt barbarians into their modules, which have black hair, while some of the nicer barbarian minis have blond hair. The Carrion Tribe barbarian is not great, but he looks decent with the Icons of the Realms Uthgardt Barbarians, which are rare and cost $7 or so per piece. Covered face makes it easier to use it in multiples.
The Kobold champion looks fine next to some other kobolds from that era, most notably the Kobold Soldier, which still is my go-to and favorite generic kobold mini. I can see how it does not really up to it's name, but it's a fine kobold warrior.

Disclamer: I prefer black bases, and as such have painted many clear bases black. Pictures of my collection will reflect this, varying from the original way the mini was produced.
